Power bills can skyrocket even in summer - Here are our tips for avoiding looking like this guy!
And we can't stress this enough...Check your number! https://www.powerswitch.org.nz/whatsmynumber is a free website that checks what you are paying currently and matches better power companies to you. All you need is a copy of your power bill.
Once you have switched - or if you are already getting the best deal - now its time to figure out the biggest costs and reduce or eliminate them. Many companies give an hour of free off peak power, or have off peak times that have reduced rates. Do all your big power items in this off peak time.
This is our list in order of power consumption:
Dryer - Some are more efficient than others, a good rule of thumb is $2 an hour.
Hot water - large cylinders draw 3 KW of power. they take about 5-10 min to click over into heating mode, so start your shower/dishes/bath a bit before your free/discount period.
Dishwasher - most dishwashers heat their own water, so make sure this is ready to go during off-peak times.
Heated towel rails - these normally have set times that they run. Get yours changed to run during your off-peak time
But I work during off-peak times!!!! - ok, we understand. Off peak times are early morning, mid day & later evening. Hopefully you can catch one of these periods, but if not, consider getting a timer. There are cheap ones available (but you will need an electrician to fit one to your hot water cylinder) from any hardware store. Set all your major appliances to go all at once and watch the savings roll in.
